At Pittwater Family Practice, we are excited to offer a comprehensive Menopause Health Assessment to support women during this important stage of life. With the recent initiative introduced by Medicare, we are proud to provide this essential service to help women navigate the physical and emotional changes that come with menopause.
A Holistic Approach to Menopause Care
At our practice, we take a comprehensive approach to your health during menopause. Our doctors don’t just focus on hormone therapy; we look at your overall wellness to help you achieve optimal well-being. This means considering factors such as diet, exercise, mood, and thyroid function, all of which play a crucial role in your health during this time.
We also take a broader view of your health, looking beyond menopause to ensure you’re supported in every aspect of your life.
What is Menopause?
Menopause marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. It is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period. Menopause is the result of a natural decline in the body’s production of estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal shift causes various physical and emotional changes.
What is Perimenopause?
Before menopause, many women experience perimenopause—the transitional phase leading up to menopause. Perimenopause typically starts in a woman’s 40s but can begin earlier. This phase can last anywhere from a few months to several years. During perimenopause, the body’s estrogen levels fluctuate unpredictably, and as a result, women may begin to notice symptoms of menopause even though they are still having menstrual periods.
Symptoms of perimenopause can include:
Irregular periods: Periods may become shorter, longer, or more irregular.
Hot flashes and night sweats: Often a precursor to more severe symptoms in menopause.
Mood swings: Emotional ups and downs can become more frequent.
Sleep disturbances: Many women experience trouble sleeping, either from hot flashes or general insomnia.
Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired or low in energy.
Decreased libido: Reduced interest in sex due to hormonal fluctuations.
Vaginal dryness: A decrease in estrogen can cause vaginal tissue to become thinner, leading to dryness.
Symptoms of Menopause:
After perimenopause, once a woman has gone 12 months without a period, she enters menopause. However, the symptoms often continue or evolve. Some of the most common symptoms include:
Hot flashes and night sweats: Sudden feelings of heat, followed by sweating, can disrupt sleep.
Mood swings and irritability: Hormonal fluctuations can affect emotional well-being.
Sleep disturbances: Trouble falling or staying asleep due to night sweats or anxiety.
Vaginal dryness: Reduced estrogen levels can lead to dryness, discomfort, and increased risk of urinary infections.
Fatigue: Many women report feeling constantly tired during menopause.
Weight gain: Hormonal changes can lead to increased fat storage, especially around the abdomen.
Memory issues: Difficulty concentrating or experiencing “brain fog” is common during menopause.
Menopause Health Assessment
Menopause Health Assessment provides women with access to a thorough health check-up during the transition to menopause. This initiative aims to ensure women receive the care, guidance, and treatment they need to manage their symptoms effectively and live healthy, fulfilling lives.
Our Menopause Health Assessment includes:

Treatment Options for Menopause and Perimenopause
At Pittwater Family Practice, we understand that each woman’s experience with menopause and perimenopause is unique. Our goal is to provide personalised care to help you navigate these transitions smoothly. Some of the most effective treatments include:
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
HRT is often considered the gold standard for managing symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It involves replacing the hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that the body is no longer producing.
Benefits: HRT is highly effective in reducing hot flashes, night sweats, and preventing bone loss.
Forms of HRT: Available in several forms including tablets, patches, creams, gels, and vaginal rings.
Considerations: HRT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE. We will discuss your health history and individual risks to determine if HRT is right for you.
Non-Hormonal Treatments
For women who prefer not to use HRT or are not candidates for hormone therapy, there are other treatments available.
Lifestyle Modifications
Making small but significant changes in your lifestyle can go a long way in managing menopause and perimenopause symptoms. Some of the most effective strategies include:
Dietary changes: A diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and phytoestrogens can support bone health and balance hormones.
Regular exercise: Helps with weight management, mood stabilization, and improved sleep.
Stress management: Yoga, mindfulness, and meditation can help with mental well-being and reduce stress.
Alternative Therapies
Many women seek out natural or complementary therapies to manage their symptoms. We offer advice on treatments.
